Brave Barking Dog

May 17, 2013

The barking woke her with a start
To a smoke filled room she must depart
She knew that barking saved her life
That awful, fateful night.

Through the flames she did race
Flying down the stairs with saving grace
Outside on the lawn, there she realized
The barking was still held captive there inside.

She flung herself at the door
To go back in and save
The barking not outside
But flames leapt out burnt her bad.

Then terror was in her eyes
As the barking ceased to be
She sobbed, she wept, she cried
Knowing, the barking just had died.

The barking saved her life that day
This she knows as she stares
At the scars of that frightening night
When the barking saved her soul
In a awful, awful frightening night.

Rest in peace dear brave, barking dog
You gave your life to save her life and
It will be remembered throughout all life
That brave, courageous barking dog
Who saved her life.

  1. Heros with fuzzy faces carry many saving graces. Fire is so very scary – was it your home?

    • No, it wasn’t our home but a neighbours. Very tragic and overwhelming even after all these years.
