Memories come
Then
They pass
I ask the question
Did they really happen
Or
Was I in a dream
That wasn’t part
Of my past?
Memories vague
Sometimes
Vibrant as if they happened
Yesterday
Not long ago
In a distant, distant past.
I’ll remember, smile
And be
Reliving memories
Remembering
A past that was
Really me.

When I think
Of all the things
That have disappeared
Gone away
Happened yesterday
My heart joins forces
With my soul
To help me understand
Why it all had to go away
Yesterday.

Will I show you who I am
Will I reveal the face
I know I’ve been?
Will the lines of tomorrow
Be etched
Across my taunt skin?
Will the ones
That happened yesterday
Be still there
In a full or forced grin?
I don’t know the answer
Cause you see
I don’t know who I’ve been.

Seldom do I see the likes of you
heading down the same path
as me.
We talk and laugh, pass the time of day
never once thinking what has happened
yesterday.
This moment is all we have
Never looking forward to what may come
in future days.
Then I’ll smile, you’ll laugh as we part
no longer sharing the same path
on our separate ways.

I wonder why the words they say
Hurt, cut, fray away.
I’m sure that’s not what they intend to say
Still, it’s happened, it happened yesterday.
Some words were cruel, some just offhand
I lay awake all night, trying to understand.
