Hummingbird

Hummingbird safe on your journey be
Many pleasures I’ve had watching ye

Time has come and I must let it be
Trust your flight south is a safe journey

In the cool fall light you make yourself ready
Ready for that long flight

Flower to flower do you fly
Sharing pollen, drinking til dry

Maybe next summer I’ll see you again
Humming beneath flowering stems

Drinking sweet nectar alongside some bees
Enjoying the warmth and raising a family

Right now though, all I see is a hummingbird
Getting ready for that phenomenal journey

Wishing you safe, wishing you well
Make it there and please, come back as well.

Note: As I finished writing this poem and rereading it out loud out on our deck, a hummingbird came up so close i could feel the air movement from her wings on the side of my head. She hovered…

A Hummingbird Came

Hummingbird and Feeder ~ photo by Patrice

A hummingbird came
To my window yesterday
She pleaded and begged
Me not to put away
That feeder which fills
Her each, everyday.

She needs calories
To fly away
On an epic journey
To warm, hot lands
Far far away.

Maybe tomorrow
She’ll leave
Before the snow flies
And the leaves
Are deceased.

So now, today
She pleads
Fill it up, leave it be
Help her get ready
For her long, long
Epic journey.

A Hummingbird Sings

July 28, 2017

Patrice Clarkson's Blog

A hummingbird hovers making sure its safe
To drink nectar that brings forth
A feeling of heaven’s gate.

A hummingbird’s wings sing as she flies
In between blooms sending scent promising
Just about everything.

A hummingbird’s nest of twigs and things
Babies so small
They are next to nearly nothing.

A hummingbird dodges leaves and flowers
On the hunt of insects nutritious there
Amongst other things.

But you know I don’t think
That I’ve ever heard
A hummingbird sing
Anything.

I Saw A Hummingbird Amongst Snowflakes

May 12, 2017

Patrice Clarkson's Blog

I saw a hummingbird amongst snowflakes
Shattering life, no respite
Falling into spring cold and shivering
Hovering over brave blooms
As you come to make a summer home
In this land that has no way
To warm and comfort
On this cold spring day.

Fly south I’d say, then wait a day
Before braving storms to come back
To the land you can call
A summer home once more
Yes, I saw a hummingbird
Amongst snowflakes just today.

She hovered a few seconds then flew away. I have not seen a hummingbird since. Amazing. I like to think she said goodbye too.

I Saw A Leaf Wave

September 25, 2014

Shattered Tree ~ Photo by Patrice

I saw a leaf wave
In the breeze made
By a hummingbird’s wing.

Then is when I knew
Nothing exists on it’s own
No one, no one’s alone.

One vibration
Can set in motion waves
Creating mountains
Or deep caves.

That’s what I felt
When a hummingbird’s wing
Made a leaf wave.

I Saw Two Hummingbirds

June 5, 2014

Lily a hummingbird ~ Photo by Patrice

I saw two hummingbirds
At my feeder today.

They didn’t fight
They hovered and ate
Then, just flew away.

The Drinks Go Down

May 27, 2013

Iris photo by Patrice

The drinks go down
In the hummingbird feeder
As the sun warms the sky
Grass blows on a breeze
Destined to bring rain
To the evening’s brilliant blue sky.

All seems right
All seems as it should be
No sight of anger
Or struggle to combat.

Just a spring day
Over coming all that.
